TAMARA TUNIE (Director/Producer)

SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER is Tamara Tunie’s directorial debut.  “I’ve been in front of the camera for many years now.  And always the student, I have learned from experience more than any film school classroom could teach me.  I have shared my knowledge with young directors, and now it’s time to use that knowledge for my own films.”

In addition to her many film, television and theatrical roles, Tamara Tunie is one of the Producers of the hit Broadway musical SPRING AWAKENING that is presently taking Broadway by storm and one of the Lead Producers that brought August Wilson’s final work, RADIO GOLF to Broadway.

Known to both primetime and daytime television fans, Tunie has wowed audiences as both M.E. Warner on Law and Order: SVU, and as Jessica Griffin on the CBS daytime drama As the World Turns.  Praised for her depth and range, Tunie’s amazing abilities have garnered her nominations from the NAACP Image Awards (twice) and the Soap Opera Digest Awards (twice).  Last June, she was the recipient of the “MADE IN NY” Award, presented to her by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Katherine Oliver, the Commissioner of Film and Television in New York City, for her contribution to the Entertainment World.

Tunie returned to the theater world in Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” with Denzel Washington, the play’s first Broadway staging in over 50 years.  Immediately following, she received rave reviews for her turn in the lead role of Madame de Merteuil in “Les Liasons Dangereuse” at the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey.

Tunie has had other memorable roles on television, such as the recurring character of Alberta Green in season one of the hit series 24 (when she worked on three series simultaneously), as well as guest appearances on Law and Order, Sex and the City, and NYPD Blue.

Tunie has worked with some of the most respected directors of the screen, including Taylor Hackford, Brian De Palma, Mimi Leder, Harold Becker and Oliver Stone.  She had the unique opportunity to work with the legendary Al Pacino; she portrayed the possessed wife of a partner in his law firm in the hit film The Devil’s Advocate, and his press secretary in City Hall.  She also worked with famed director Kasi Lemmons and Samuel L. Jackson on both Eve’s Bayou and The Caveman’s Valentine.

Tunie got her start in the theater, and “Julius Caesar” was not the first time Broadway beckoned.  She has shared the stage with Lena Horne in the Broadway musical “Lena Horne:  The Lady and Her Music” and starred in David Merrick’s revival of “Oh Kay!” with Brian Stokes Mitchell. Tunie toured Europe with “Bubblin’ Brown Sugar” and portrayed Helen of Troy in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of “Troilus and Cressida” in Central Park.  In addition, Tunie played Maggie in the first all African American production of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” at Theatre Virginia in Richmond.  After September 11th, she co-starred with many veterans of Broadway, including Audra Mc Donald, in the 20th anniversary benefit concert of “Dreamgirls.”

Tunie serves as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Figure Skating in Harlem, Inc, a non-profit organization that teaches education and life skills to young girls in the Harlem community through the art and discipline of figure skating.  She is also involved with the Randalls Island Sports Foundation, as well as other organizations.

Tunie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carnegie-Mellon University.  She resides in Harlem with her husband, Jazz Vocalist/Post Editor Gregory Generet.
